A recent conversation with an existing client regarding our services revealed to me a new layer of perspective to the role our caregivers can play in a client’s wellbeing.
This client, himself a veteran of war, suffers from a debilitating disability that sometimes makes it increasingly difficult to complete even normal daily activities. When it came time to visit his doctor, the client did not always feel that he was able to report to his physician all the things that were relevant in order to get an accurate assessment of the progression of the illness.
“It is very difficult to remember all the things that are wrong with you” he confided. “Now, as they happen to me, I talk to [my caregiver] about them and then, when we go to the doctor, she remembers all those things so we have gotten a lot better service from the VA” he added. “I wouldn’t have that if it weren’t for Divine, which I appreciate immensely, and I would suggest anyone that has the ability to get that service to take advantage of it and get it. It will make their life a lot better, it has made mine”, he concluded.
Having someone to talk to or to be with can be a life changer for an elderly with memory loss, debilitating disabilities, or other afflictions. Having assistance with common activities of daily living such as dressing and grooming, bathing, meal preparation, light house cleaning, and others will add to the person’s wellbeing and quality of life, as will simple companionship and transportation to/from grocery shopping, errands, social activities, and, yes, doctor visits.
However, in the case of a loved one that suffers more demanding chronic illnesses, counting on a caregiver to remind of medications, to take note of even seemingly minor episodes, or to report other incidents to family members can make a big difference and bring peace of mind to all involved.
The client above further recalled a particular instance when the insistence of his caregiver finally persuaded him to take his medication. “Without having Divine, I may have had a heart attack and died” he asserted not without candid appreciation for our role.
